This being my first partaking in the exodus from conventional life to that far off hill just the other side of Northam, otherwise known as Oppikoppi, I naturally had high expectations of this much hyped and revered music festival. I was not dissappointed.

Charged with manning the monitor desk on stage afforded me about 32 hours of up-front, intimate and exciting listening. The first evening saw among others The Hothouse Flowers with excellent performances from obviously experienced band members getting the crowd excited, despite that most would have heard their music for the first time. To me though, the highlight of the weekend would have to be the Parlotones. I enjoyed their stage presence and found them a real down to earth bunch while chatting to them on-stage.

Selaelo Selota, Tidalwaves, Mafikizolo, Ndithini Mbali & McCoy Murabe. What more could you ask for while parking off on a Sunday afternoon on a lush green lawn right outside Marula Sun's back-door.

This show provides music lovers the opportunity to sit back, relax and absorb the atmosphere as the artist on stage's performance gets propelled by an intimate crowd interaction.

The final day of UJ Rag started semi subdued due to nothing other than - you guesed it - the weather! For as Murphy’s Law would have it, the rain started to pour down half way through our rigging of the stage. Its really quite a sight seeing half the Blue Array crew frantically running around, getting soaked to the bone and trying to cover the PA with anything water-proof that they could lay thier hands on.

Eventually and to everyone’s relief, the rain did die down and the show could carry on, albeit an hour late. The awesome line-up for the evening was: BLK JKS, Evolver, Love Jones, Prime Circle, Wonderboom, Karma and The Parlotones.

Each band provided a brilliant and unique performance, such as Love Jones’ choreographed fighting scenes and the lead singer of The Parlotones’ wacky dance moves, which more than once had the crowd of about a thousand screaming for more.

Unfortunately, as they say, all good things must come to an end and at around half one that's what happened when the last band left the stage. This also inevitably meant that our DREADED work had begun… yes, striking! Yet we did all manage to survive (some with a bit more trouble than others) to see us rig another day.

As an internationally recognized artist, this man is a legend in his own right. Undoubtedly a “jazz master” he has what it takes to make the crowds listen, intently.

Backed by a “tight” band that really knows their stuff, this was a performance not to forget. Their music is soul food to any human being and Hugh has one hell of a stage personality. Also worth mentioning, is the fact that the organizers really did a good job with the venue and everything looked stunning!

Well done to Oppikoppi for organizing such a memorable event.
